When does the stock market open and close? 

Through the combination of multiple trading sessions* and venues, stock markets are now open nearly 24 hours a day, five days a week (from Sunday evening at 8 pm ET (New York time) to 8 pm ET on Friday evening (with the exception of about ten minutes per day between the overnight and pre-market trading sessions (3:50 am  - 4:00 am ET) as well as federal holidays.*  

• Regular U.S. Stock Market Hours: 9:30 am - 4 pm ET (NY time) Monday - Friday. The stock market is closed on weekends and federal holidays.

    Extended Hours Trading Sessions

• Pre-Market Trading Hours: 4 am - 9:30 am ET (when the regular market opens)
• After-hours Trading Hours: 4 pm - 8 pm ET

• Overnight Trading Hours (US stocks and ETFs): 8:00 pm - 3:50 am ET, first session begins on Sunday at 8:00 pm ET and the last session ends on Friday at 3:50 am ET. Trades executed between 8:00 pm ET and 12:00 am ET will carry a trade date of the following trade day.

Extended hours trading sessions take place both directly before and right after the regular stock market trading session (which opens at 9:30 am ET and closes at 4:00 pm ET (New York time). 

Extended-hours transactions are brokered electronically through the Electronic Communication Network (ECN), which is currently made up of five different markets that operate under the NYSE umbrella. You may often hear of these systems being referred to as ETNs.

Nasdaq

• 4:00 am ET to 9:30 am ET: Pre-market trading hours
• 4:00 pm ET to 8:00 pm ET: After-hours trading

NYSE Arca Equities market (for ETFs)

• 2:30 am ET: Pre-opening session (during this time, you can enter orders to be queued up until the early open auction begins at 4:00 am ET)
• 4:00 am ET to 9:30 am ET: Early trading session
• 4:00 pm ET to 8:00 pm ET: Late trading session

NYSE* (for growing companies) 

NYSE American (for growing companies), 

NYSE Chicago (for institutional brokers dealing with derivatives), and 

NYSE National (which has 8,000 equity securities) markets

• 6:30 am ET: Pre-opening session (during this time, you can enter orders to be queued up until the early open auction begins at 7:00 am ET)
• 7:00 am ET to 9:30 am ET: Early trading session
• 4:00 pm ET to 8:00 pm ET: Late trading session* 

   * NYSE  does not have a late trading session)

Overnight Trading takes place between 8 pm and 3:50 am ET.

How does 24 hour trading work?

24-hour trading allows investors to buy and sell certain securities, around the clock, with limited interruptions.

What makes up 24 hour a day trading? 

24 hours are made up of three parts: regular hours, extended hours (including both pre-market hours and after-hours) and overnight trading sessions.
