When does the stock market open and close?
Through the combination of multiple trading sessions* and venues, stock markets are now open nearly 24 hours a day, five days a week (from Sunday evening at 8 pm ET (New York time) to 8 pm ET on Friday evening (with the exception of about ten minutes per day between the overnight and pre-market trading sessions (3:50 am - 4:00 am ET) as well as federal holidays.*
Extended Hours Trading Sessions
Extended hours trading sessions take place both directly before and right after the regular stock market trading session (which opens at 9:30 am ET and closes at 4:00 pm ET (New York time).
Extended-hours transactions are brokered electronically through the Electronic Communication Network (ECN), which is currently made up of five different markets that operate under the NYSE umbrella. You may often hear of these systems being referred to as ETNs.

What makes up 24 hour a day trading?
24 hours are made up of three parts: regular hours, extended hours (including both pre-market hours and after-hours) and overnight trading sessions.
